GoldSpice Red Lentil Dal

Red Lentil Dal

Serves 4

Prep time: 10 mins

Cooking time: 20-30mins


  • 400ml Coconut Milk 

  • 250g Red Lentils 

  • 1 Onion chopped 

  • 50g Ginger, finely grated

  • 3 Garlic Cloves chopped 

  • 4 tsp GoldSpice 

  • 1 Cinnamon stick

  • 2 Long green chillies

  • Juice of 2 limes plus lime wedges to serve (important!)

  • 200 ml coconut cream plus extra to serve

  • Chopped Coriander


  • 2 tbsp Coconut Oil

  • 1 Onion thinly sliced

  • 3 Garlic Cloves chopped 

  • 1 tsp Brown Mustard Seeds 

  • 1 tsp Chilli Flakes

  • Large pinch of GoldSpice



  1. Put coconut milk, lentils, onion, ginger, garlic, GoldSpice and chilli with 800ml water.

  2. Bring to boil, reduce heat, simmer, covered, for 15 mins, stirring occasionally until lentils broken down.

  3. Season, squeeze in lime juice and the coconut cream 

For the Tadka:

  1. Melt coconut oil over medium heat add onion, garlic mustard seeds, chilli and GoldSpice and fry for 2 mins until fragrant and then stir half into lentil mixture.

  2. Crisp up the remainder and serve it on top of the dal with extra coconut cream, coriander and lime wedges.
